Does CBD Make You Sleepy? Your CBD Sleep Questions Answered

“CBD helps me sleep so much better!”

This is something we hear on the regular at Pure Craft. In fact, better sleep is one of the most commonly-touted benefits of CBD.

We also hear questions about CBD and sleep, like...

  • What’s the best CBD for sleep?
  • Will CBD make you tired during the day?
  • How long does it take for CBD to help you sleep?

These are all great questions. Since answering them calls for a bit more than a simple “yes” or “no,” we dove in to explain them the best way we know how. With science!

The Best Type Of CBD For Sleep

Just to be super-duper clear, CBD = cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is one of many cannabinoids found in cannabis.

Depending on what variety of cannabis it comes from (marijuana or hemp) and how it’s made, the CBD will fall into one of three categories.

  • Full-spectrum CBD
  • Broad-spectrum CBD
  • Isolate CBD

Each type of CBD has pros and cons. And, each type may affect your sleep differently.

Full-Spectrum CBD

One of the possible cons of full-spectrum CBD is that it might contain higher levels of THC. THC is the cannabinoid in marijuana associated with that feeling of being “high.” Could this make you groggy? You bet. THC is intoxicating and has a sedative effect.

It could also cause the munchies, which may induce a food coma. Pass the chips, please.

Isolate CBD

Isolate CBD contains zero THC. So, no drowsiness. But, isolate also doesn’t contain terpenes and flavonoids.

Terpenes and flavonoids are the salt and pepper of the dish that is CBD — they bring out the best in each other. When combined with even the tiniest amount of THC, their synergy is known as the “entourage effect.” In theory, the combination of CBD plus these other compounds could help you get the most possible benefit from your CBD oil — including better sleep.

Broad-Spectrum CBD

Goldilocks might say that broad-spectrum CBD is “juuuust right!” And we would agree! It brings the terpene and flavonoid entourage with no more than trace amounts of THC. It contains no more than 0.3% THC, to be exact.

Does CBD Make You Drowsy During The Day?

If you’re going the full-spectrum route, there is a chance the THC could leave you longing for a nap. But CBD itself doesn’t have that effect.

Just because CBD helps you sleep at night doesn’t mean it will make you feel sleepy during the day. In fact, CBD users have reported that it helps them feel more clear and alert and sleep better at night, among other benefits.

Wait, what? It really is the best of both worlds! Here’s how.

The Biology Of CBD & Sleep

You might sleep well for a night if you take a sedative. On the other hand, that won’t improve your sleep health.

Sleep health is about supporting your sleep and wake cycles. That’s achieved when your body is in a state of homeostasis.

Your body is in homeostasis when all of your systems are running like well-oiled machines. Basically, it’s you as your best balanced self. An internal glow-up.

Your body wants to be in homeostasis. We’ve got biological systems built-in to help it stay on track. But there’s one common culprit that throws it off: stress.

Stress can cause or aggravate insomnia and other sleep disorders, increase sensations of pain and symptoms of anxiety, and aggravate health conditions. This can leave you staring at the ceiling until 3 am, or wake you up in the middle of the night.

That’s where CBD comes in.

How Does CBD Improve Sleep?

Here’s the cool part. You may be able to override the effects of stress by biohacking the communications center in your body that keeps your systems in check: the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Our biohacker friend, CBD, works with your ECS. While science hasn’t worked out the mechanics of exactly how CBD and the ECS mingle, evidence suggests that CBD can help you maintain homeostasis. That’s why folks are turning to CBD to manage their health conditions, boost their immunity, and improve their overall wellness.

Isn’t biology fascinating?

How Long Does It Take For CBD To Help You Sleep?

You might be wondering how long it takes for CBD to kick in.

Some people report improved sleep in a day or two. Others notice a difference after several weeks. Sticking with a consistent CBD schedule is the best way to gauge what your body needs to find the sweet spot.

That said, there are CBD oil products formulated to help you drift into dreamland faster. Here are a few things to look for if you want the fastest results at bedtime.

Bioavailability

Bioavailability is a fancy way of saying something is easy for your body to absorb. We use MIT-researched nanotechnology to make the most bioavailable CBD on the market.

Water-Solubility

Choosing a water-soluble CBD tincture helps ensure your body will absorb it as quickly as possible. After all, we’re made up of 60% water!

Additional Sleep Support

Melatonin, also known as the sleep hormone, is released by your body to help you fall asleep. But, things like stress and health conditions can interrupt it. Taking CBD with melatonin at bedtime could speed up the sleepytime process.

Counting CBD Sleep Sheep

Now that you know your spectrums from your isolates, and how CBD supports sleep, you’ve got the knowledge you need to find the best CBD for your slumber needs.

  • If you’re down with THC (and it’s legal where you live), you can get full-spectrum CBD. Just be sure to make time for an afternoon nap.
  • CBD isolate is an option, but it doesn’t have the best chance of supporting sleep.
  • Don’t want to be groggy during the day, but want help falling asleep at night? Go for broad-spectrum CBD.

Optimize your bedtime routine with a broad-spectrum, bioavailable CBD formulated with melatonin for max results.
